Tue Dec 3, 2002 - Wed Dec 4, 2002
Leadership and Management Development
Two essential ingredients for the organization to succeed when being tasked to do more with less are inspired leadership and effectual management. Neither comes easily and must be constantly reinforced through effective motivation, training and providing leaders and managers opportunities at risk-taking and walking the talk in a supportive environment. Discussion will be centered on brief case studies and experiences of leaders and managers meeting challenges in different types of situations. We will hear about leadership principles, ethics, and practices, what taking risks in IT really entails, what the IT staff expects of its leaders and managers, the characteristics of exemplary and successful leaders and managers, assessing leadership skills and developing people managers.
Career Planning and Development
Should career planning and development be considered luxuries during a period of reduced flexibility to adequately execute them? People resources and funds are limited. Priority has shifted to doing the essential tasks to keep the organization alive in the marketplace. Perhaps they should, but not
devoting enough effort of building human capital will most likely bring a very short-term benefit while putting the organization at serious long-term risk. Discussion will center on how to proceed despite the limitations, and successfully maintain the technical and management tracks required for company growth, provide career ladders to help develop people and match job levels and compensation so as to serve as developmental, recruitment and retention incentives.
