The events of 2001 have highlighted dramatic changes in the political, economic and sociological conditions in our world today. These forces will have significant impact on the way companies compete in
global and local markets, and as we have seen during other eras of rapid change, those companies
best prepared to adapt to these new conditions will emerge the winners.
As leaders within their companies, CIOs need a clear perspective on these newrealities in order to help
determine their company's strategic direction. At this meeting CIOs and senior executives will engage
in a discussion led by experts who will delve into these issues..
The Economy.
Kathy Cooper, Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, will share the U.S. Department of Commerce's
outlook on the state of the U.S.and international economies.She will discuss the Administration's economic plans and the potential impact of those plans on business in the U.S. and with its trading partners. She will also discuss economic indicators, initiatives and measurements for e-business. Kathy
will provide insightful economic trends and analyses to assist CIOs in planning IT strategies consistent
with the direction of the economy..
Security.
John Tritak, Director of the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office, will provide an overview of the U.S.
Government policy on critical infrastructure protection.He will review key elements regarding the challenges of protecting the Nation's critical infrastructures, what they are and why they are important,
complexity of the problem, view of the threats, the role of the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office
(CIAO), the need for public and private partnerships to ensure critical infrastructure security, along with
steps being taken by the Federal Government to address the issue.Of great importance to CIOs is the
potential of business interruption through cyberattacks and intrusions into the systems at the core of
our businesses and government agencies. Insight as to what organizations should be doing to help ensure
the protection of critical infrastructure and maintain a secure business environment in this information
age will be discussed..
Privacy.
Paul Arne, Attorney with Morris, Manning, and Martin, will provide an understanding of privacy as it is
practiced in the U.S., Canada and the European Union. He will discuss the debate on how those
practices impact the collection, storage and use of personal data that crosses national borders.
Included will be a discussion of what senior executives and CIOs need to be concerned about in terms
of accountability, responsibility and liability as they relate to protection of personal information.
