Addressing Social Media and New Disparate Devices (read IPAD)

Interdisciplinary Research: Preparing Computer Science Students for the Changing Landscape
Over the last three decades, PCs, the web and smart devices have democratized computing, radically changing the relationship between computer scientists and their partners/clients. The most obvious change is that most applications and research are now done in collaborative teams of computer scientists, artists, subject matter experts, marketing personnel, etc., rather by isolated groups of computer scientists. Even the best funding opportunities for computer science researchers now require collaboration across many disciplines. The focus of this presentation is on how university research groups have (or must) change to recognize the shift from discipline-centric to interdisciplinary research without losing the important role they play in advancing the core of their own discipline. The approach taken will be to focus on the speaker's lab as an example of one that collaborates with nearly every college and institute across campus and yet (hopefully) stays true to its mission to advance core knowledge in the discipline of computer science.
