Information Security - An Update on Evolving Events
Mon Sep 23, 2002 - Mon Sep 23, 2002
In most organizations, Information Security remains caught in a tug of war. As dependence on electronic transmission and storage of information increases, so does vulnerability to hackers, denial of service and other forms of intrusion. There is pressure on Security professionals to continually seek and employ innovative techniques to protect information assets and to raise the level of awareness and participation in security endeavors. Homeland Security is exhorting commercial enterprises to increase
investment in information security.
However, familiar problems, such as budget and resource shortfalls, persist. Once the shock of the moment has passed, it is usually difficult to obtain more than lip service, and support from management and employees quickly ebbs. Also, there is increasing ingenuity, inventiveness and persistence on
the part of people seeking to breach corporate defenses. The mobile workforce relies upon mobile devices which often contain corporate secrets. Newer communication technology, such as wireless LANs, open up new security vulnerabilities.
The group will discuss how these forces are evolving and approaches and experiences in addressing the issues they bring. Topics include:
Providing adequate worldwide IT security capabilities is a high priority for McDonald's. McDonald's has more than 30,000 restaurants in 121 countries. Implementing consistent global operational IT security standards is made challenging because of the differences in culture and technology infrastructures among the locations. This session will cover the contrast between operational standards and tactical standards and how they mesh.
Results of a pre-meeting survey of the state of security at the attendees' organizations will be discussed and the implications will be explored in a facilitated open discussion, led by Perry Schwartz of Georgia Tech.
Security managers from Harland Company, Harris Corporation, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Anadarko Petroleum will also lead breakout sessions to identify the most important challenges confronting the attendees' organizations. In an open discussion the audience will then explore what courses of action can be taken to implement solutions for these and other problems.
