IMF Forum on Innovation in IT

The IMF will hold a Forum on Innovation in Atlanta, GA. at the Georgia Tech Hotel & Conference Center. It is scheduled for Thursday June 7th and Friday June 8th.

Innovation with Big Data & Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
Dr. Flavio Villanustre 
Vice President of Products and Infrastructure, LexisNexis

Dr. Flavio Villanustre is going to speak on how Big Data and a Big Data processing platform helped transform LexisNexis Risk Solutions from $0 to $1.4 billion in 10 years. He will present a case study showing that Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Big Data can catapult innovation, product delivery, and overall competitiveness in your organization. This particular case study includes ways to cut costs while increasing your capacity to scale for growth and innovation.
 
Speaker Bio:  

Dr. Flavio Villanustre is the Vice President of Infrastructure and Products for HPCC Systems. In this position, Flavio is responsible for information and physical security, overall infrastructure strategy, and new product development. Prior to 2001, Dr. Villanustre served a variety of roles in different organizations related to infrastructure, information security, and information technology. In addition, Dr. Villanustre has been involved with the Opensource community for over 15 years through multiple initiatives. Some of these include founding the first Linux User Group in Buenos Aires (BALUG) in 1994, releasing several pieces of software under different Opensource licenses, and evangelizing Opensource to different audiences through conferences, training, and education. Prior to his technology career, Dr. Villanustre was a neurosurgeon.
 

Innovation in Cyber-Security Threat Avoidance 
John Holmblad
Principal Information Security Services Specialist, U.S. Senate
 
The U.S. Senate has recently re-competed their Cyber-Security Services contract. This enabled them to update their Statement of Work in order to reflect the current environment and threats. It also provided great insight into how the market for these services has changed since 2007. Principal Information Security Services Specialist John Holmblad will discuss the lessons they have learned, and continue to learn, during this endeavor.
 
Speaker Bio:
 
Mr. Holmblad works for the US Senate Sergeant at Arms IT Security Branch where he serves as a Principal Information Security Services Specialist. He is part of a team of professionals who are responsible for protecting the Senate from cyber threats. In addition to performing his day-to-day duties, he serves as the Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) for the Cyber-Security Services contract the Senate has in place with Macaulay Brown, Inc. Through this contract, the Senate obtains 24x365 support for its Security Operations Center (SOC) as well as ongoing engineering support for the development, implementation, and operation of systems and technologies that are at the core of any well managed SOC operation. Prior to his service with the Senate, Mr. Holmblad held diverse executive roles in private sector businesses such as Telenet, Verizon (formerly GTE), Sprint, Alcatel-Lucent (formerly Alcatel-Alsthom), and Diveo.
 

Visual Analytics and Information Visualization: Bringing Your Data to Life

Investigators have an ever-growing suite of tools available for analyzing and understanding their data.  While techniques such as statistical analysis, database queries, machine learning, and data mining all have benefits, John Stasko will explain how visualization can add much needed benefit to the mix. Visualization brings capabilities for exploring data when one does not know which questions to initially ask. In this discussion, he will describe why visualization is so powerful, how it helps people in data analysis, and provide some provocative examples of visualization techniques and systems. 
 
Speaker Bio:
 
John Stasko is a Professor in and Associate Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Stasko is an internationally recognized and widely published researcher in the area of human-computer interaction, with a specific focus on information visualization and visual analytics.  His Information Interfaces Research Group (http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii) develops ways to help people and organizations explore, analyze, and make sense of data in order to solve problems. Stasko, named an ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2011, has been Program Co-Chair for both the IEEE Information Visualization (InfoVis) Conference and IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Symposium. He has served on numerous journal editorial boards, including ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction and IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. Currently he is a Steering Committee member for the IEEE Information Visualization Conference.
 

Corporate Use of Social Networking to Promote Collaboration

Many organizations are focusing their attention on social tools bleeding over into the enterprise. They are looking to use internal social networking as a way to promote their brands and connect with their customers. Some companies have even piloted internal social tools designed to help their employees "socialize." Unfortunately, many struggle when using these social network platforms (SNP) to get "real work" done through enterprise-wide collaboration. Carlos Bermudez, Director of Projects and Usability for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), is going to present on his experiences in this area. He will focus on the business case for a work-enabling SNP, the social-enabled collaborative work approach, and lessons learned in the space.
