Keeping Projects on Track
Mon Nov 3, 2003 - Mon Nov 3, 2003
After a project is approved and running, the need for executive oversight does not diminish. In fact, project inertia stemming from sunk costs, invested prestige and project team ownership can make it more difficult to objectively evaluate existing projects and make necessary mid-course corrections. On the other hand, effective project governance, based on an engaged steering committee and regular checkpoints can help companies avoid painful stop-loss decisions to cancel runaway projects later.
3M Company requested a focused working session on these issues, hosted at their campus in St. Paul. At this meeting, IT executives from a broad range of organizations discussed the governance challenges associated with effective oversight of existing projects.
