Managing IT Through Generational Transitions
Thu May 26, 2005 - Thu May 26, 2005
Over the next several years, growing rates of retirement in the baby boomer generation will affect more than the solvency of Social Security. This generational exodus will create challenges for IT departments, as they contemplate the loss of much of their deep and specific knowledge of systems, technologies, and business processes. In particular, many organizations' daily activities continue to run on applications written in COBOL and Assembler, with business rules and processes embedded deep within code that is maintained by individuals who are fast approaching retirement age.
This web conference will provide an opportunity for members to discuss some of the practical implications of this looming crisis. Among the topics of discussion:
- Retaining Implicit Knowledge of Retiring Workers
- Living with Legacy Technology (e.g., COBOL, Assembler)
- Evaluating options to migrate to newer technologies
- Extending the life of legacy applications
